About Us

Garrett County Memorial Hospital is a 56-bed, not-for-profit, acute care facility situated in the Appalachian mountain region of western Maryland.

Image In 1950, the dream of a hospital for the citizens of Garrett County, Maryland and the surrounding West Virginia counties became a reality through the generosity of George W. Loar, who bequeathed $175,000 to Garrett County for the construction of a community hospital.

Garrett County Memorial Hospital originally opened its doors with 30 patient beds and an emergency room, laboratory, X-ray department and operating room. As the population and needs of the community grew, GCMH added 20 more beds in 1955, making it a 50-bed acute care facility.

A major addition to the hospital was completed in late 1970, which added 22 patient beds, upgraded equipment, an expanded emergency room, new laboratory, X-ray, accounting and dietary departments, recovery room, cardiac care unit and additional operating and delivery rooms.

In 1977, a four-bed coronary intensive care unit was installed, resulting in GCMH's current bed complement of 56.

Image Ground was broken during the winter of 2003 for an $8.5 million project which was funded in large part by generous contributors of the Foundation’s Capital Campaign, including the Carl Del Signore Foundation who made the lead donation, as well as, lent his name to the new wing. In addition to the $2.7 million raised by the Capital Campaign, GCMH received a $1.5 million grant from the Maryland Bond Program and additional funding from a variety of monies offered by the United States Department of Agriculture and the State of Maryland.

Construction of the Carl Del Signore wing added over 18,000 square foot of space to the facility, thereby accommodating current services and allowing for future growth. The wing houses the Emergency Department and the Same Day Surgery Unit, both of which increased their patient-care ability by bringing the number of private treatment rooms in each unit to 15 – nearly doubling their previous capacity.

The ER now features dedicated triage, cardiac, orthopedic, gynecological, isolation and safe rooms, in addition to five general treatment rooms.

On the second floor of the new wing, the Same Day Surgery Unit is larger and will handle the increased patient volume, following the nationwide trend for an increasing number of procedures to be performed in an ambulatory setting as opposed to an inpatient setting.

Today GCMH enjoys strong community support, reflected in much of the upgraded equipment and services the hospital is able to provide. The facility houses a Family-Centered Maternity Suite as well as a 10-bed Sub-Acute Unit. The emergency room, which sees about 19,000 patients annually, is fully staffed and open 24 hours daily.

The second largest employer in Garrett County, GCMH is supported by a staff of 358 professional, highly-skilled employees backed by state of the art equipment. The hospital's medical staff is primarily comprised of a qualified team of family care physicians who combine their expertise with that of specialists in the fields of dentistry, dermatology, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, pathology, podiatry and radiology.

GCMH maintains a working relationship with several area hospitals including Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland and Mon General Hospital and Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.
