Foundation Established September 1, 1987, the Garrett County Memorial Hospital Foundation is a voluntary association of public-spirited citizens of Garrett County, Maryland and Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia. It was created to operate as an auxiliary to the hospital. The Foundation's long-term purpose is to enable GCMH to obtain equipment and facilities which might otherwise exceed the hospital's own funding capabilities. To achieve this, one of the Foundation's principal roles is to develop, within the community, a clear understanding of GCMH's capabilities, limitations and needs. During the summer of 1988 when the Foundation launched its initial campaign for community awareness and commitment, over $1.1 million was raised against a goal of $1 million. This is the largest commitment of private funds for a public purpose ever made by the people GCMH serves. The funds will establish an endowment to help the hospital meet its current high-priority equipment needs and to create a long-term source for funding future equipment needs. Reassured by the past success of the Capital Campaign, as well as, more recent fundraising events, the Foundation is directing its energies to the development of other programs designed to encourage long-term support for Garrett County Memorial Hospital:
