Volunteerism is one of many ways in which Garrett Regional Medical Center benefits from strong community support.
Our volunteers are an extraordinary group of individuals who care about their hospital and the healthcare of their community. They are a varied group with a longstanding tradition of excellence – a combination of professionals, retirees, policymakers, educators, fundraisers and spiritual leaders, as well as, others who assist staff or simply work to make our hospital a warmer and friendlier place. GRMC volunteers can be found in virtually every area of the hospital assisting in one of five branches of volunteer service – the Board of Governors, Chaplaincy, the Foundation, the Loar Auxiliary and VIVA.

An important part of patient care at GRMC is meeting the spiritual needs of our patients. The Chaplaincy program hosts a “Chaplain of the Day” service which provides patients with access to a chaplain seven days a week. Our chaplains are an integral part of the GRMC health care team – always readily available to provide a compassionate presence, a listening ear and a prayer with patients, their families and our staff.
Chaplaincy services offered at Garrett Regional Medical Center are non-denominational and are administered by nearly 30 members of the clergy from the surrounding area.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the Chaplaincy program may download the application or contact Volunteer Services at (301) 533-4041 or by the email link below.
Established September 1, 1987, the Garrett Regional Medical Center Foundation is a voluntary association of public-spirited citizens that promotes the public’s awareness of the capital needs of the hospital as well as facilitates the collection of funds to meet those needs. It was created to operate as an auxiliary to the hospital.
For more details about the Foundation or how to become involved with this organization, see our Foundation web page.
The Heart of the Hospital describes the location in the main lobby as well as the sentiment of the volunteers who work in the Gift Shop.
Founded in 1976, the Loar Auxiliary is a dedicated group of volunteers who manage and operate the Loar Auxiliary Gift Shop located on the first floor in the main lobby. This group of volunteers devote countless hours to ensure the Shop's success by performing a variety of tasks including the meetings and greeting of customers and assisting with their purchases, stocking inventory, ordering supplies, and keeping the shop tidy.
The Loar Auxiliary also maintains the Cup O' Joe vending area adjacent to the main lobby, offering traditional vending snacks, as well as specialty and gourmet coffee. The Cup O' Joe is accessible 24 hours a day.
Loar Auxiliary volunteers extend their effort to sponsoring regular blood drives for the American Red Cross on the hospital campus, providing both volunteers and canteen services. To make an appointment for an upcoming drive visit the American Red Cross website at http://www.redcrossblood.org/greateralleghenies
The Loar Auxiliary can also be found on Facebook
VIVA is an acronym for Volunteers in Various Areas, which is quite suitable as the volunteers work out of five distinct areas and touch the lives of nearly everyone that enters the facility.
These volunteers staff areas throughout the hospital and are responsible for greeting, escorting, comforting and assisting with special projects directly involving patients, visitors and various hospital departments.
VIVA volunteers staff the information/registration desk in the main lobby, maintain an office that provides general office-type assistance as needed, and act as liaisons between physicians and patient families during surgery. Volunteers also assist with general comfort measures in the Emergency Room, they deliver and process both the internal and external mail, as well as, a variety of other services.
