Garrett County Memorial Hospital was awarded the 2012 OR (operating room) Excellence Award for infection prevention and was featured in the September issue of Outpatient Surgery Magazine.
The OR Excellence Awards recognize achievements toward surgical safety, pain control, prevention of surgical site infections and satisfying patients.
Elaine Geroski, BSN, CNOR, director of surgical services, was instrumental in making a number of enhancements to the Surgical Suite at Garrett County Memorial Hospital. At her direction, the suite underwent many renovations that allowed a change in traffic flow as well as allowed staff to re-emphasize the standards of sterile technique. The staff developed their own infection prevention committee which produced multiple changes to increase patient safety and as a result, decreased surgical site infections.
“This was a team effort consisting of many departments throughout the hospital. We made the changes to improve patient outcomes, so to be recognized nationally is truly an honor,” explained Geroski. “This award actually re-emphasizes our motto, that we provide high quality care at Garrett County Memorial Hospital.”
