NURSE EXTERNS TRAIN AT GCMH

The Garrett County Memorial Hospital Nurse Extern Program welcomed two participants this summer.

Sarah Musselman and Brandy Belanger, both of Oakland, MD, participated in the eight week program. Sarah attends Allegany College of Maryland in Oakland, MD. Brandy attends Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland, MD. The nurse extern program allows nursing students to work in the hospital under the direction of an experienced Registered Nurse between their junior and senior year of college. Throughout this program the nurse externs obtain valuable clinical nursing experience and skills.

Program participants spend eight weeks rotating through the Medical/Surgical Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room, and the Family Centered Maternity Suite. The extern performs all aspects of nursing duties with the exception of administering medications and starting IVs. Upon completion of the program, GCMH presented Sarah and Brandy with a $500.00 scholarship.

The program accepts two externs each year. Among other requirements, applicants to the program must be currently enrolled in a program approved by a state board of nursing to prepare candidates for registered nurse licensure.
